This is Not a Funny Show

Posted on April 02, 2026

Okay… it is funny.

Yes, my show is funny—I promise. But about a decade ago, I thought it would be a good idea to open my shows by telling the kids not to laugh. Simple as that. This is not a funny show, so nobody laugh.

That was the premise… and I fell in love with it.

The whole opening sequence hasn’t changed much since then, aside from a few small tweaks. Now it’s something I use to warm up the crowd at almost all of my kids and family magic shows, whether it’s birthday parties, summer camps, or theatre performances.

I love performing this because the audience instantly gets my vibe. They can tell right away that the show is going to be a fun ride—and that they might have to take a little control, because I’m clearly not all there.

“Your glasses! Your glasses!!!”

On a good day, I’ll look out and see a kid or two in the audience turning their glasses upside down to match mine. (It’s funny the little ways you realize you’re making an impact.) And on a bad day… the whole audience just stares at me in silence.

The funny thing is, even that isn’t actually bad. It just tells me I need to pivot and take the audience in a slightly different direction to get them warmed up.

But in this video, you’ll see—and hear—just how much fun the audience is having.

And here’s the wild part: when you watch it, remember that we’re about 25 seconds into the show.

Twenty-five seconds… and the kids are already roaring.

That’s one of my favourite things about performing—creating that kind of energy almost instantly, and getting everyone involved right from the start.

I hope you enjoy the clip!
